Bauxite Bauxite is not a mineral, but a product of rock weathering that contains several constituent minerals. It occasionally forms recognizable hand specimens, but they vary greatly in their appearance due to the abundance of inclusive material. Clay minerals, hematite, magnetite, goethite, siderite, and quartz are common impurities, and most deposits contain lesser amounts of rutile, anatase and zircon. They range in color from yellowish-white to gray, or from pink to dark red or brown if high in iron oxides. Bauxite often forms from laterites, soils that develop in warm tropical climates and that tend to be leached of all soluble material. Bauxites are currently forming in tropical regions in Australia, Brazil, and western Africa. |
